If you missed this weekend’s CNN Freedom Project Documentary, Trapped by Traditon, be sure to tune in on Tuesday for its replay at 5:30 am or 1:30 pm, EST.
Anil Kapoor, known worldwide for his award-winning film, Slumdog Millionaire and special contributor to the Freedom Project, pushes for change in his native India during the thirty minute special.
What we love about Kapoor’s vision is that it coincides with our goals at Anchal: to educate women about the possibilities that exist outside of the sex trade.
“I think education is the key to solving most of the problems of this world, especially in this country [India], where the illiteracy rate is alarming,” he says.
Despite the continued trafficking of females in India, Kapoor sees progress, giving the documentary a note of hope — especially for us at Anchal. Thirteen year old Puja, for example, is the first girl in her family to go to school. With a sparkle in her eye she tells Kapoor she will continue her education and become an actress one day.
These are the kinds of opportunities we see opening up for the daughters and sons of the women who have begun working with Anchal. Education provides a change in perspective and reveals avenues previously unseen.
